A spotted deer lost its life after being chased by dogs in the backwaters of the Khadakwasla dam Tuesday morning. Lying in a pool of blood, the carcass of the spotted deer surrounded by dogs, was found near Kudje village at around 7.30 am on Tuesday.
The carcass was first spotted by Ajit Paigude, who immediately informed `Sakal` about the incident and returned to the spot an hour later, to take pictures of the carcass. A little later, forest guard Ankush Vanjale, who reached the location, found the antlers of the deer missing.
A postmortem revealed that the spotted deer was bleeding profusely after being bitten by dogs on its hind legs. The deer is expected to have approach the dam to drink water because veterinarians found a large amount of water in the dead deer`s stomach.
According to Wanjale, the antlers must have been stolen mistaking them for those of a Sambar, because antlers of a Sambar are believed to be useful in treatment of deep wounds. Appealing to local residents to return the horns to the forest department, Range Forest Officer, Vishwas Bhadale has said that each of the houses in the vicinity will be searched for the trophy. Possession of such items is an offense as per provisions of the Wildlife Prevention Act, he added.
