SC Roars: No tourists in Reserves

The Supreme Court has made it clear tigers and tourism cannot co-exist, in a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Monday banned all kinds of tourism activities across the 40 tiger reserves in the country, Ergo, wildlife safaris, elephant rides, trekking and nature camps in the core areas of tiger reserves are banned.
The order means all five properties of Jungle Lodges and Resorts in the five tiger reserves of the state - Bandipur, Nagarhole, Dandeli, Bhadra and BRT - must shut down. The present tourism zones in Nagarhole and Sunkadakatte are with in the core area. Karnataka, which has the highest number of tigers in the country, was one of the first states in the country to notify a Core Critical Tiger Zone in 1972.
