Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Governments are involved in a slugfest on the death of a female elephant on Noida Expressway in June this year.

The issue has become a bone of contention between department of forests and wildlife of Delhi and UP. The Wildlife Department of Delhi Government has questioned the report sent by Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Gautam Budi Nagar saying that the report sent by DFO does not match the one sent by it.

It may be noted that a 35-year old captive elephant known as Roop Kali) was crushed to death and another 25-year old was injured when a speeding truck rammed into them near Mahamaya Flyover at the Noida-Delhi border on June 29. Noida police had registered a case against the owner of the deceased and injured elephant while the UP’s Wildlife Department has sought clarification from Delhi as why they permitted entry of elephant without informing them.

In a letter to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of the UP Government, Delhi Government`s chief wildlife warden DM Shukla clarified that Wildlife Department had not given any permission to owner of Kali to enter any- where in Uttar Pradesh.

The department is also investigating the ownership certificate of the female elephant. Act 1972. The said elephant was also implanted with an ID microchip bearing no 961-00-10000 06052 dated August 26, 2002," the letter said.

On the other hand, it is stated that Iqbal, son of Shaukat Ali was the owner of the injured elephant whereas the fact is the other way round. "As per the record maintained in this office, it is clarified that the ownership certificate of injured elephant was issued in the Delhi has given permission to transporation in UP while Delhi has denied stating that it has not given any permission regarding entry of elephant in Noida. It would be pertinent to mention that entry of elephant cannot be allowed without the permission of the Wildlife Department of the States. Wildlife Department and traffic police finalize the route of the elephant in the State.
