Tigress ST-2, relocated from the Ranthambore National Park to the Sariska Reserve in 2008, has given birth to at least one cub. ST-2`s relocation was the first such experiment in the country for re-populating the reserve after all its tigers were poached in 2005.
The experiment had come under the scanner as the tigress was unable to deliver even after four years of its relocation. Finally, the mother and the cub were captured by a trap camera placed by forest officials on Wednesday.
"The tigress ST-2 can be seen walking with one of her cub. There may be more cubs but we are not sure at this moment, said Bina Kak, Rajasthan tourism, forest and environment minister. The cub is around two to three-months old as it only at this stage that the mother ventures out with her cubs.
Sariska now has five adult tigers of which three are females. With the cub, the total number is now six.
