NEW DELHI: A lot of kids have been invited and a big cake ordered for the occasion. The birthday boy is a celebrity who turns 10 on July 21. And, the party promises to be unlike anything the city has seen before.

The Delhi zoo has decided to celebrate the birthdays of its animals, beginning with one of its most popular attractions — Vijay, the white tiger. Next in line for a birthday bash is Rita, a 57-year-old chimpanzee who has lived in the zoo since 1964.

Vijay`s birthday will be celebrated on July 20, since his actual birthday, a day later, falls on a Friday when the zoo is closed. Schoolchildren will be invited for special events, including a quiz competition and lectures will be held on white tigers and their habitat.

There are plans to have a cake cut for Vijay, who was in the news in 2014, when the tiger mauled to death a youth who had jumped into its enclosure. In addition, cutouts of the cat will be placed near its enclosure so visitors can take selfies.

Vijay`s birthday party will be the first of many. "We are compiling a list of the birthdates of all animals," said zoo director Renu Singh. "Since Vijay is the most popular animal here, we decided to start the tradition with him. At these celebrations, children can interact with these animals and get to learn more about them."

Vijay was born in the zoo in 2007 to Laxman and Yamuna. While Laxman, also white tiger, died in 2009, Vijay`s mother was transferred to the Gwalior zoo in 2011. Vijay has since fathered five cubs at the Delhi zoo.

Zoo officials said there other celebrations have been planned, including that of Rita, the chimpanzee, who is the oldest animal in the zoo. "She came to Delhi in 1964 from the Amsterdam zoo, but we don`t have the record of her birthdate," said Singh. "So, we will dedicate a day just to celebrate the zoo`s oldest animal. We want to highlight all the diverse animals here, even those that visitors don`t pay much attention to."
