State to translocate tiger population across reserve

The Hindu

Mindful of growing infighting among tigers in the State, the government will translocate some of the tigers across different reserves.

Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar told the Assembly on Tuesday that it was not sustainable to restrict the State’s 200-odd tiger population to traditional habitable reserves. The per tiger area has alarmingly shrunk to 12 sq.km, the Minister said.

Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan highlighted the concerns over increase in tiger poaching in Maharashtra. The State’s tiger population is fast depleting, and even the national tiger task force has raised concerns over tiger deaths in the State — highest in the country — he said in the lower house.

“Maharashtra’s death count is alarmingly high and there are intelligence inputs that poaching is a on a rise. This is serious matter since our big cat population is only 200,” Mr. Chavan said.

Mr. Mungantiwar said a committee has been formed to consider translocation of tigers. The shrinking population has led to infighting and death of tigers in many parts, he said. “Once the committee submits its report in three months, we will translocate tigers across the reserves with the help of experts from the Central government,” he said.
